How a Tailored Women’s Fitness Plan May Benefit You

Whether you are preparing for pregnancy, navigating postpartum recovery, or simply aiming to feel your best at every stage of womanhood, these are some common concerns women face and how targeted exercise can help support your body and overall well-being:

Low Energy & Fatigue

Hormonal shifts, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, labor, postpartum recovery, and the demands of daily life (often with little sleep) can leave women feeling drained. Cardiorespiratory training builds energy reserves, strengthens the respiratory system, and improves stamina—helping women better handle everyday tasks, the physical demands of pregnancy, and the ongoing stressors of motherhood.

Back & Postural Pain

Weight fluctuations, breast changes, pregnancy-related posture shifts, and long hours sitting or carrying children can all contribute to upper and lower back pain. Strengthening the core and abdominal muscles helps stabilize and support the spine, while stretching and mobility work ease tension, reduce cramps, and improve posture.

Low Mood & Self-Esteem 

During pregnancy, hormones rise and fall — dramatically impacting your physical and emotional state. And while some new mothers talk about the joys of parenting, you may feel like you’ve got a case of the baby blues. Exercise is proven to elevate mood and counteract feelings of stress, anxiety, or depression that can occur during pregnancy and beyond. It also improves self-esteem and body image, helping women adapt easier to increased body weight and bulk.

Inability to Lose Excess Weight

While all mothers are expected to gain weight, many find it difficult to return to their postpartum body after childbirth. Everyone goes at their own pace but recovery from pregnancy and delivery often takes around 6–12 months. Consistent exercise plays a vital role in helping new mothers regain and even improve their pre-pregnancy shape. 

Lack of

Support or Encouragement

It is common for mothers to feel a sense of isolation and stress. A pre or postpartum exercise class provides an emotional outlet and is a tremendous resource for encouraging new moms to exercise – providing the peer support needed for women to feel comfortable taking away from their babies to focus on themselves.

Pelvic Floor Concerns

Pregnancy, childbirth, aging, or even high-impact exercise can weaken the pelvic floor, leading to issues like leaking, heaviness, or core instability. A well-designed fitness program can strengthen and restore pelvic floor function, improve bladder control, and support long-term core health.

Hormone Balance

From PMS to perimenopause to postpartum hormone shifts, women experience cycles that directly impact mood, energy, and metabolism. Exercise has been shown to regulate hormonal fluctuations, ease symptoms like irritability and anxiety, and promote better sleep and emotional resilience.

Lauren Howze is a maternal wellness professional, certified pre- and postnatal fitness specialist, and community health advocate dedicated to improving health outcomes for women and families. Through MOMumental Fitness, she develops and delivers wellness programs that support maternal health, postpartum recovery, health education, and community engagement.
